Excerpt: The Vykom Satyagraha was one of the important campaigns with which Gandhi was associated in the 1920s—and was promoted by the Indian National Congress party. It took place within the broader context of the Indian independence struggle, but was focused on a key issue of justice in Indian society—the discrimination against Dalits (outcasts or untouchables in English translation) within the Hindu caste system.
