Darweish and Rigby's book Popular Protest in Palestine: The Uncertain Future of Unarmed Resistance (2015) provides a valuable contribution to the study of Palestinian resistance under Israeli occupation. By focusing on unarmed resistance, the book addresses an under-researched area within conflict studies and popular protest movements. It offers both empirical and theoretical insights into why this form of resistance has struggled to produce meaningful impact in terms of conflict transformation. The case study examines the difficulties Palestinian popular resistance has faced in achieving its goals, particularly in the context of a protracted conflict with a powerful state. The authors explore the internal and external challenges that have limited the effectiveness of these movements, including the dynamics of occupation, international politics, and the socio-political environment. Their analysis enriches our understanding of the complexities involved in mobilizing nonviolent resistance within such a deeply entrenched conflict, providing a nuanced perspective on the limitations and potential of unarmed protest in Palestine.

As a journal for a relatively new academic field, it is important for us to publish texts that contribute to developing 'Resistance Studies' with theoretical ideas, high quality empirical material, interesting analysis, and/or cases from a wide spectra of societal contexts.

  • Have a clear focus on 'resistance' and how resistance influences power relations?
  • Contribute to our theoretical understanding of resistance, or is a better fit for the sociology of social movement field?
