Why Algerians express their solidarity with Palestinians Resistance in the Gaza war

Prof Dr Laeed Zaghlami
Algiers University
In this paper, I will present some views and attitudes of Algerian audience towards the war in Gaza and their heavy exposure to a flux of images from the scene enables them to be aware of the dramatic events. It is almost seldom to find an Algerian not informed and unaware of the tragedy in Gaza. Besides, I will explain why Algerian authorities have been supporting the Palestinians and how this policy is enshrined in the official texts as well as incrusted in the minds and hearts of the people. Also, Algerian media have always reported and covered heavily, extensively and intensively the events through ‘Palestinian correspondents’ which contribute to offer a balanced images on the situation in the ground Despite worldwide media coverage of Gaza War in terms of diversity and plurality, viewers in Algeria prefer watching TV channels that are supporting Palestinians cause. For them, most western TV stations are biased towards Israel therefore they shift to some Arab TV channels; mainly Al Jazeera, Al Mayadeen, Al Araby, Palestine Today and Al Ghad TV whereas TV channels like Skynews Arabic and Arabiya TV are seen as biased to Israel. Despite the availability of images on the screens, viewers tend to trust videos and shootings coming from the military media of Palestinian resistance and particularly their media icon Abou Oubaida, who is perceived the leader, the saviour and the pride of the Palestinians and the Arabs. Algerians are admiring his personality and charisma; his discourses are source of inspiration, trust and relief, despite all images that are broadcast by different TV channels.

Before we get started

Thanks for considering a submission to the Journal of Resistance Studies! Before we get started, we just want to make sure that everything is ready. JRS receives more submissions than we can publish. As a journal for a relatively new academic field, it is important for us to publish texts that contribute to developing 'Resistance Studies' with theoretical ideas, high quality empirical material, interesting analysis, and/or cases from a wide spectra of societal contexts.

Does your article:

  • Have a clear focus on 'resistance' and how resistance influences power relations?
  • Contribute to our theoretical understanding of resistance, or is a better fit for the sociology of social movement field?
  • Include an abstract, citations, and a reference list?
  • Does it follow the guidelines in our policy statement?

If you have answered yes to these questions, we look forward to reading your submission. Let's go!
