Abstract : This paper explores climate advocacy as a form of community resistance in the Democratic Republic of the congo , Drawing on my experience as a renewable energy student , climate justice activist and human rigths advocacate, the paper examines how conflict affected context, It highlights grassroots strategies challenges and lessons for advancing climate justice in the Global south.
1.Introduction
The Republic of the Congo is one of the countries most affected by the combined impact of climate change, armed conflict , poverty and weak governance. Floods, drougths, environmental degradation and resource exploitation continue to threaten livelihoods, food security and fundamental human rigths. In this context climate change is not only an environmental issue but also a social and human rigths crisis
As a student in renewable energy and an activist engaged in climate justice and rigths advocacy, I argue that climate advocacy represents a powerfull form of resistance . Through advocacy, communities and youth challenge structural injustices, demand accountability, and promote sustainable and equitable solutions sch as clean Energyaccess.
2. Climate Crisis and Human Rigth in the DRC
Climate change in the DRC exacerbate vulnerabilities. Extreme weather events displace communities , destroy agricultural promotion and increase competition over natural resource , These impacts deepen power and contibute to violances of basic human rigth , including the right to food , water, health and safe environment.
Despite contributing very little to global greenhouse gas emissions, congolese communities bear a disproportionate burden of climate impacts, This injustice highlights the need to frame climate action as a human rigths isssue and to recognize affected communities as rigths holders rathers rather than possive victims.
3. Climate Advocacy as a form of Resistance
In contexts marked by conflicts and marginalization, advocacy becomes a form of resistance. Climate advocacy in the DRC involves raising awareness, mobilizing communities, engaging decision markers, and amplifying local voices at national and international levels.
Youth activists play central role in this resistance, Through campaigns , commnity dialogues, digital platforms and peaceful actions, young people challenge extractive models of development and demand climate justice. Advocacy resists systems that prioritize profit over people and the environment.
5. Clean Energy and Climate Justice
Access to clean energy and renewable energy, is a key component of climate justice in the DRC, millions of people lack access to electricity , relying on polluting and harùmful energy sources, Renewable energy solutions ofter opportnities to reduce emissions, improve livelihoods , annd strengthen community resiilience
Fromm y academic training in renewable energy , I view energy not only as a technical solution but also as a political and sociaml issue, Advocacy is essential to ensure that energy transition are inclusive , community centered and respectiful of human rigth
6. Challenges that we are facing
Climate advocacy in the DRC faces significant challenges, including limited resources , restricted civic space , insecurity and lack of political will, Activists often operate in risky environments and minimal institutional support.
However, important lessons emerge. Building strong community networks, linking climate issues to daily lived realities and connecting local struggles to global climate justice movements strengthen advocacy efforts, Youth leadership and cross sector collaboration are critical for sustained resistance
7. Conclusion
Climate advocacy in the Democratic Republic of Congo is a vital form of resistance against environmental injustice , human rigths violations and unequal development by linking climate action, clean energy and human rights , youth and community advocates contribute to more just and sustainable futures.
This experience demonstrates that climate justice must be rooted in local realities while connected to global struggles. Recognizing advocy as resistance allows for more inclusive and transfoemative approaches to addressing the climate crisis.
