Resistance to “automatic” draft registration

A diverse coalition is mobilizing opposition to a recently-passed U.S. law that seeks to step up preparations for and readiness to activate a military draft. The new law authorizes the U.S. Selective Service System to begin using automated involuntary registration to increase the number of individuals currently listed in the agency’s database of potential draftees, effective in December 2026.
This is a generational inflection point in the historic stalemate between draft resistance and planning and preparation for military conscription. As such, it provides an opportunity to look back at the history of draft resistance since 1980, and forward to the emerging next phase of draft resistance.
