Taking its cue from the revival of musical forms of resistance in Viktor Orbán’s Hungary, the paper will aim to address the legacies of the underground scene in late-socialism, and discuss the role of critical songs in expressing dissident voices since 2014. The paper will focus, in particular, on the theme of “apolitical politics”, and will argue that the emphasis on carving out a space for cultural autonomy could be interpreted as an unexpected revival of the paradigm of “anti-politics” that characterised forms of cultural opposition in late-socialist Hungary. The discussion will reflect on the crucial role of culture in the revival of strategies of opposition after a period of rupture and will reflect on the importance of taking intentions into consideration when interpreting cultural acts of defiance.
