Building Peace in the Midst of War: Yurumanguí’s Resistance and Stand for Autonomy in Buenaventura
Linda Posso Gomez
Coordinadora Oficina Pares Pacífico Delegada de Presidencia Consejo Superior Unipacifico
In Colombia’s violent conflict-affected Pacific region, the Afro-Colombian community of Yurumanguí declared its territory free of illicit crops and armed actor control. Facing paramilitary threats and state eradication policies, residents organized a series of nonviolent campaigns—manual crop eradication, collective mobilization, and public resistance—to defend autonomy and social cohesion. This case highlights grassroots peacebuilding, cultural resilience, and nonviolent resistance as foundations for sustainable peace.
