Title
Democratizing Strategic Nonviolent Resistance Education: Building the People-Powered Training Platform
Abstract
In an era marked by both widespread democratic backsliding and increased mobilization to resist this authoritarian resurgence and other dangerous trends, the need for effective, accessible, and adaptable nonviolent resistance education has never been more urgent. The People-Powered Training Platform (PPTP), launching in 2026, is a response to this need. Developed by the Albert Einstein Institution, the PPTP is a multimedia platform designed to decentralize nonviolent resistance education and build the strategic capacity of movements worldwide.
In addition to incorporating academic research, the PPTP is co-created with and for movement actors themselves. Module development intentionally works in two directions: translating relevant academic research into accessible formats for activist or non-academic audiences, while also using tools such as the Case Study Workbook to capture strategic insights from practitioners’ own experiences with campaign planning and execution. Additionally, to ensure relevance and rigor, component modules will be developed in collaboration with practitioners and specialists across fields - including law, digital security, technology, elections, negotiations, and media - integrating interdisciplinary knowledge into the practice of strategic nonviolent resistance.
The PPTP’s modular structure includes explainer videos, how-to guides, case studies, rapid-response materials, and strategic tools like the Strategic Estimate Workbook. Together, these resources support not only campaign design, but also systematic movement reflection and insight distillation, enabling lessons learned in practice to inform future campaigns and to be shared across regions, generations, and issues through an evolving, practitioner-informed knowledge base.
A central aim is to support decentralized leadership that remains accountable to the communities it serves, enabling coordinated action without centralized control. This reflects the evolving structure of contemporary movements, which require both autonomy and strategic coherence.
All educational materials will be designed for accessibility - printable, mobile-compatible, and low-bandwidth-ready. In 2026, the platform will be piloted and tested, with structured feedback loops to identify gaps, improve usability, and guide its growth.
The platform builds on Gene Sharp’s framework of strategic nonviolent action, while recognizing that the tools and wisdom of nonviolent struggle have been learned, adapted, and passed down through centuries of human experimentation with how to achieve freedom and justice. The PPTP is offered as a horizontal, continuously evolving, and democratized infrastructure for nonviolent resistance education - one that supports current movements and contributes to a globally shared culture of strategic, reflective, and effective civil resistance.
This presentation will include two parts:
(1) An introduction to the thinking behind the platform, including its theoretical grounding, participatory development process, and approach to strategic planning and education; and
(2) An interactive demo and workshop, where participants will engage directly with one of the platform’s modules, complete its exercises together, and contribute feedback that will inform future iterations.
(3) As part of our session, in addition to presenting several interactive exercises we’ve developed that help participants apply theoretical insights, engage with case studies, and draw out strategic lessons relevant to their own contexts, we also see this workshop as an opportunity to prototype new modules in a “resistance education hackathon” format, a hands-on process where participants can collaboratively design and test new exercises.
This format reflects the participatory spirit of the platform itself and invites attendees to contribute directly to the growing ecosystem of resources that support effective, contextualized, and strategic nonviolent action.
