Toward a Democratic Space: Re-theorizing Hardt and Negri’s Theory of Multitude Making
Salman Sikandar
Hardt and Negri conceptualize Multitude as a multiplicity of differences existing together. "Multitude Making" therefore is the way to organize the Multitude as a constituent power. However, many theorists have objected to its practical application in anti-capitalist and anti-imperialist struggles. For example, this paper reconstructs the theory of Multitude Making by exploring the debates of the World Social Forum. Drawing on the latter and Laclau and Mouffe's theory of radical democracy, I extend Hardt and Negri's theory to resolve the contradictions within the Multitude through a Democratic Space. I define Democratic Space as a space which balances logic of autonomy and the logic of unity in a political movement.
