Reviewing the last decade of the interconnected, global network of diverse social struggles that challenge the dominant systems of exploitation and oppressions, this workshop brings together some of the leading adherents of the “dynamic dance of solidarity” described by radical campaigner Jai Sen. Understanding the interconnectedness of various social and civil society movements, the multiplicity and diversity of those movements – from the World Social Forum to the Zapatistas and beyond, the commitment to open dialogue over acceptance of dogmas, and the “horizontalist” approach to building spaces of justice, the presenters will discuss local, regional, and international experiments. While open-ended in their exploration, the presenters are encouraged to address the movement outcomes and capacity questions that speak to the efficacy of their resistance and construction of counterpower and/or alternatives. Noting their own work (with Boston’s EncuentroCinco, New York’s Resistance in Brooklyn, with the Global Tapestry of Alternatives, and in intentional Movements of Movements networking), this workshop will invite all participants to locate and map their own actual or planned work within this expansive framework.
